How do PTC heaters work?

Chill Out Radiant Heat explains the science behind how PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) heaters work and how they can self-regulate.

How do PTC heaters work?

Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) heaters are self-regulating heaters that run open-loop without any external diagnostic controls. … PTC heaters utilize Positive Temperature Coefficient materials i.e. materials that exhibit a positive resistance change in response to the increase in temperature. Our mats use carbon to create the resistance which in turn creates controlled radiant heat. The PTC heaters top temperature is controlled by the amount of carbon we mix into the mat. Because the PTC heating system is energized by 24v electric and encapsulated under the floor, it is the safest floor heating product on the market. It uses the least amount of energy and has no maintenance costs. PTC mats are being used in a variety of applications such as under shingle roofs for snow melt, in RV homes and tiny houses, and under the flooring in luxury cars and vans.
